design / research

The Bloor West Athletic Centre was a collaboration with Jegan Vincent De Paul. The program of this design project was to provide a community centre with full athletic facilities and low income housing to the Bloor West Village neighbourhood of Toronto.

Program was distributed through two large volumes which were serviced by three cores (containing circulation, mechanical and washroom facilities). In developing these cores, we opted to differentiate them as much as possible from the program volumes so the cores were constructed out of concrete and the volumes fitted with curtain walls.

The sectional study model above illustrates the interface between the program volumes (foreground) and cores (background). A louvre system was designed to allow and modulate daylighting through the south-facing walls of the athletic facilities.
