design / research

This project was my introduction into architecture, information visualization, and design for that matter. It was conducted at LAIAD under the guidance of William Taylor and the mandate of the project was to produce a series of artifacts mapping the narrative of Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick.
The basswood model pictured above is a study of the topography the ocean floor in relation to the surface of the ocean as delineated through longitude and latitude.

My first foray into the world of infographics (and I haven't looked back since). This diagram is a visualization of the final battle between the Pequod (in black) and Moby Dick (in white). It tracks attacks, position in relation to surface of water (i.e. above or below), and time.

A model developed from the diagram above and an extremely close reading of the final pages of Moby Dick. It is an detailed representation of the final conflict between the crew of the Pequod and Moby Dick.
The base of the model is built from birch plywood and basswood, the ocean surface is made from frosted plexiglass, and the markers are copper metal tubing.
