design / research

Well, it is time for my semi-annual DJ gig. On Saturday May 26th I'll share the stage with a meeting of Monolake (aka Robert Henke) and director/video artist Peter Mettler as well as a live performance by Granny'Ark, a DJ set by Task, and live video by Noir.
In a lot of ways this event is a multi-disciplinarian summit, with everybody involved being quite versed in several domains. Peter Mettler and Noir (Rachel Vulliens) have been working with Greg Hermanovic/derivative over the last year testing and contributing to the interface of touch for live video mixing. Peter was honoured with a mid-career retrospective at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival for his genre bending body of work. Over the past few years it has been a delight to watched Tom Kuo (DJ Task) take the momentum of the wabi collective and transform it into a very solid multimedia event promotion outfit (which he recently rebranded as foundation).

Robert Henke has been a whirlwind of productivity since his last visit to Toronto, much of this work translates his composition into spatial experiments. Like Carsten Nicolai, Robert is a member of a new breed of electronic musicians that has crept out of the club and into the gallery. Robert has been producing installation art for a few years and both his Atlantic Waves and Linear Grid projects are quite provocative.
Robert was the subject of an interview in Vague Terrain 05: minimalism last year and Granny'Ark contributed an audio piece to the issue as well. Don't sleep on this event if you are in town on the 26th! Check out pusher.cc for more information. The event will take place at Deleon White gallery.
