Himmelb(l)au Lands in the Midwest

Just yesterday I was lamenting that I hadn't posted about an architectural project in a while. Leave it to the Austrian firm Coop Himmelb(l)au to get me excited about the creative potential of architecture. Upon first glance the firm's recently completed Akron Art Museum looks like it may rank with other Himmelblau gems like the UFA Cinema Centre in Dresden. The thing that I love about Himmelblau projects is not such much their gestural panache, but their dynamic public spaces, structural idiosyncrasies and perennial use of diaphanous metal. The firm also has another project, a LAUSD school for the arts in downtown Los Angeles that should be completed shortly.

Ha! Just make that atrium higher and you're right.
